Problems solved by technology

It should therefore be realized that while a large powerful magnet is ideal, it must be at a certain distance from the FDM and other components to avoid interference - the greater the distance from the FDM, the further the distance from the fuel inlet, and ferrous contamination The greater the chance of being absorbed
[0007] Shielding for electrical systems that may be affected by powerful magnets adds expense and does not facilitate the application of a solution only in the very few cases where contamination is a significant problem

Embodiment Construction

[0044] With reference to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 A conventional bar magnet 10 is shown having opposing north and south poles with magnetic field lines 11 extending between the north and south poles. The force causing the ferrous material to be attracted to the magnet varies according to the strength of the magnetic field, and it can be observed that the magnetic field is relatively weak in the direction of the north / south axis.

[0045] figure 2 An embodiment of the invention is shown in , and comprises two magnets 21 , 22 placed side by side on a flat ferromagnetic plate 23 with a separation distance. exist figure 2 In the example of , the magnets are cylindrical and have a diameter of 15 mm and a depth of 10 mm; the separation distance is 10 mm. Plate 23 is approximately 3.6mm thick. The magnets are neodymium (N35) and are plated to prevent corrosion in use. In particular, the magnets can be coated by means of an electroless nickel plating process. Electr...

Abstract

A magnet assembly for attracting and retaining ferrous particles in a liquid fuel comprises a mounting 54 with a plurality of magnets 53 arranged on one side thereof in a common mounting plane, wherein the north / south axes of the magnets are parallel. At least a pair of magnets are spaced apart and have oppositely directed north / south axes. The mounting has a magnetic permeability selected such that the magnetic field on the side of the mounting is reduced, whilst the spacing between the magnets is selected such that the magnetic field on the magnet side is enhanced. The magnets are coated to prevent corrosion thereof by fuel. The assembly may be housed in a moulded plastics housing 51. Preferably, the magnets consist of neodymium and may be cylindrical. Suitably, a flat, ferrous plate can be utilised as the mounting. A fuel tank and fuel delivery module comprising the magnet assembly is also claimed. The assembly may be oriented such that the reduced magnetic field is directed towards the fuel delivery module and / or any electrical components provided therein. In another aspect, a vehicle comprises the fuel tank, fuel delivery module or a magnet assembly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a magnet assembly for attracting and retaining particulate ferrous contaminants in liquids, particularly fuels. Aspects of the invention relate to an assembly, a fuel delivery module, a fuel tank, and a vehicle. Background technique [0002] Contamination in liquid fuels is problematic, especially where distribution from refineries to end users relies on poor quality transport and storage containers. For example, the use of older steel drums or drums may result in high levels of ferrous dirt in the form of particulates suspended in the fuel delivered to roadside vehicle fuel tanks. [0003] A particle filter is usually provided at the outlet of the fuel tank or in the fuel delivery line so that the fuel delivered to the vehicle engine is free of aerosols which could damage the fuel injection system, for example. Such filters can be cleaned or replaced at appropriate service intervals. [0004] In recent years, vehicl...
