Embodiment Construction

[0031] Exemplary embodiments of apparatus and methods are provided for providing backup or supplemental power to, for example, subsea applications using a battery reserve. In addition to a large number of subsea applications, including such as load distribution points, hybrid power systems, and any critical system backup, such as for powering emergency blowout preventers (or providing backup power for them), the present invention is also applicable to non- subsea applications. Thus, while the invention will be described as being used in subsea applications, this is only one example. The invention is applicable to a variety of emergency situations, long-term storage situations, and situations where reliability of the cell / battery pack is required.

Abstract

A power supply apparatus has at least one modular reserve battery magazine with a plurality of compartments. A plurality of reserve battery modules may be respectively replaceably provided in corresponding ones of the plurality of compartments, each of the plurality of reserve battery modules being configured to provide power when a reserve battery provided therein is activated. Each reserve battery module of the plurality of reserve battery modules includes a sleeve and a reserve battery provided within the sleeve, the sleeve being configured to fit within one of the plurality of compartments in a predetermined orientation. Each sleeve may be detachably connectable within any compartment of the plurality of compartments and includes electrical connections so that each reserve battery module of the plurality of reserve battery modules is separately replaceable while the power supply apparatus remains remotely located.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 664,882, filed June 27, 2012, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present disclosure relates to power supply equipment with multiple reserve battery modules to provide power in remotely accessible applications, and uses thereof. An example of an application is the provision of power (e.g. backup power) for subsea power functions such as in subsea oil and drilling applications where power is required for e.g. emergency blowout preventers, load distribution points, hybrid power systems, supplementary power, Critical system backup and many other power supply purposes. The present invention can be applied to any power function that requires the use of batteries which may age over time, so it is advantageous to use one or more reserve batteries which do not age until activated. Such batter...
