Abstract

A method of operating a diesel engine having an exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) comprising one or more devices for controlling exhaust NOx levels, the engine comprising a plurality of systems and components, the system and At least some of the components are adapted to be set to one or more control set points for one or more base actuators of the engine. The method includes: establishing a plurality of engine operating modes, each operating mode distinct from any other operating mode for at least one control set point; and for each operating mode, mapping fuel economy to NOx levels leaving EATS .
