One method includes obtaining a scale-free irregularity map from volumetric image data of an object or target, the scale-free irregularity map being generated based on a locally weighted histogram of the voxel distribution with respect to the voxel of interest. The locally weighted histogram includes a plurality of bins having a predetermined bin width. The local weights are determined based on a predetermined cluster length. The method also includes scaling the unscaled irregular map to generate a scaled irregular map. The unscaled irregular map is scaled based at least on the histogram bin width.
