Abstract

The invention discloses an energy absorbing air handling device for a vehicle. The vehicle includes a body, which forms a passenger compartment, and including a roof. The roof defines an upper vertical boundary of the passenger compartment. An air handling duct is disposed adjacent the roof, within the passenger compartment of the body. The air handling duct defines an internal cavity, which is operable to deliver a flow of air to the passenger compartment. The air handling duct includes an energy management system that is disposed within the internal cavity of the air handling duct. The energy management system includes at least one pillar, which is operable to deform against the roof to absorb energy transferred to the air handling duct from within the passenger compartment.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to an air handling duct adjacent a vehicle roof for delivering air flow to a vehicle passenger compartment. Background technique [0002] Many vehicles, such as sedans, or particularly sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and vans that include multiple rows of rear passenger seats, typically include air handling ducts incorporated into the headliner, adjacent to the roof of the vehicle. The air handling duct directs air flow into the passenger compartment through an exhaust vent disposed adjacent to the roof of the vehicle. The vehicle may also include an energy management system incorporated into the headliner, adjacent to the roof of the vehicle. The energy management system is configured to absorb and / or dissipate energy from applied loads. Often, the packaging and / or placement of air handling ducts and energy management systems adjacent to the roof are in conflict with each other. Contents of the invention [...
