The method comprises the following steps: detecting whether a social application is in a background running state and initiates a GPS positioning request in the background or not in a mobile terminal in order to call a GPS positioning function; if so, detecting whether a GPS module of the mobile terminal searches for valid visible satellites at present or not; if no valid visible satellite is searched at present, turning off the background running of the social application; if the valid visible satellites are searched at present, judging whether the quantity of the valid visible satellites is smaller than a preset quantity threshold or not; and if the quantity of the valid visible satellites is smaller than the preset quantity threshold, turning off the background running of the social application. Through adoption of the method and the device, the problems of long-term occupation of system resources and severe reduction of equipment endurance since social applications frequently initiate GPS positioning requests in a poor GPS positioning service environment are solved.
