Non-leaching non-fouling antimicrobial coatings

Compositions containing one or more types of membrane-targeting antimicrobial agents immobilized on a substrate with activity in relevant biological environments, and methods of making and using thereof, are described herein. The antimicrobial agents retain their activity in the presence of blood proteins and / or in vivo due to improved molecular structures which allow for cooperative action of immobilized agents and hydrophilic chemistries which resist non-specific protein adsorption. Suitable molecular structures include branched structures, such as dendrimers and randomly branched polymers. The molecule structures may also include hydrophilic tethers which provide both flexibility and resistance to non-specific protein adsorption. The membrane targeting antimicrobial agent coatings can be applied to a variety of different types of substrates including medical implants such as vascular grafts, orthopedic devices, dialysis access grafts, and catheters; surgical tools, surgical garments; and bandages. The substrates can be composed of metallic materials, ceramics, polymers, fibers, inert materials such as silicon, and combinations thereof. The compositions described herein are substantially non-leaching, resistant to non-specific protein adsorption, and non-hemolytic.

Variable Intensity Laser Treatments of the Skin

A method for providing localized heating of the dermal layers of skin of a patient, using energy in the form of a group of pulses having defined parameters in a controlled manner. This method preferably uses an optical delivery system to deliver pulsed energy to a specific spot of skin so that targeted layers of the affected skin are heated to a desired temperature range. The temperature range is optimally selected to maximize treatment efficacy while minimizing pain to the patient. Example applications include reducing wrinkles, acne, hair, scar tissue, warts, and promoting wound healing. In this method, the temperature of the selected locus rises quickly to the desired temperature range, then is maintained within a controlled range with a relatively flat temperature profile. The method maintains the temperature by controlling one or more of a pulse energy intensity, pulse width, and pulse frequency or time delay between pulses.

Scavenging oxygen

A container (22) includes a shell (24) made from a polymer, for example PET, and incorporating a catalyst, for example a palladium catalyst. A closure (40) incorporates a plug which includes a source of hydrogen, for example a hydride. In use, with container (22) including a beverage and closure (40) in position, the headspace in the container will be saturated with water vapor. This vapor contacts the hydride associated with plug (42) and as a result the hydride produces molecular hydrogen which migrates into the polymer matrix of shell (24) and combines with oxygen which may have entered the container through its permeable walls. A reaction between the hydrogen and oxygen takes place, catalysed by the catalyst, and water is produced. Thus, oxygen which may ingress the container is scavenged and the contents of the container are protected from oxidation.

Decision support system and method of positive outcome driven clinical workflow optimization

A decision support system provides workflow optimization for healthcare providers. A data repository includes patient profile data and receives real-time patient condition data from a sensor network and workflow data for the provider. The system determines a relative risk value for patients with respect to a negative outcome such as hospital transfer, and defines at-risk patients with respect to the determined negative outcome. Positive outcomes having an inverse correlation with respect to the negative outcome are determined, such as hospice admission without transfer. A clinical workflow is defined as a sequence of treatment stages associated with the determined positive outcome, and provider activity tracked for the at-risk patients with respect to first threshold values, the system further tracking a degree of provider compliance with the clinical workflow stages based on second threshold values. The system may dynamically modify threshold values for workflow stages based on client conditions, provider resources, etc.
