The method comprises the steps of judging whether a compressor is started when the air conditioner carries out refrigeration or dehumidification; when the compressor is started, after the compressor is continuously operated for the first preset time, obtaining the air inlet temperature of the air conditioner and the temperature of an indoor heat exchanger, calculating the difference value between the air inlet temperature of the air conditioner and the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger and setting the difference value as the first temperature difference; when the first temperature difference is smaller than the first preset value, after the compressor is continuously operated for the second preset time, obtaining the air inlet temperature of the air conditioner and the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger, calculating the difference value between the air inlet temperature of the air conditioner and the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger and setting the difference value as the second temperature difference; when the second temperature difference is smaller than the second preset value, judging whether the absolute value of the difference value between the first temperature difference and the second temperature difference is smaller than the third preset value; if the absolute value of the difference value between the first temperature difference and the second temperature difference is smaller than the third preset value, judging that the refrigerant malfunction exists.
