Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present application is directed to various embodiments of LED-based solar simulators. Unlike lamp-based solar simulators based on the prior art, the LED-based solar simulators described herein provide low power LED light sources capable of replicating the spectral output of the sun. Furthermore, the LED-based solar simulator devices described herein allow the user to easily change the spectral characteristics of the output signal as desired.

[0024] figure 1 A perspective view of one embodiment of an LED-based solar simulator system is shown. As shown, LED-based solar simulator system 10 includes at least one LED light source 12 , and at least one control system or device 14 . In one embodiment, LED light source 12 is coupled to control device 14 via at least one conduit (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, LED light source 12 may be wirelessly coupled to control device 14 . In another embodiment, the LED light source 12 can be coupled to the control devi...

Abstract

The present application discloses a LED-based solar simulator light source having at least one LED array formed by multiple LED groups of LED assemblies, at least one field flattening device, at least one diffractive element, and at least one optical element configured to condition the broad spectrum light source output signal and direct the light source output signal to a work surface.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 884,043, filed September 28, 2014, entitled "LED-based solar simulator and Method of Use," which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Solar simulators are used in a wide variety of applications. For example, light sources capable of replicating the spectral signature of the sun are used to test the weathering characteristics of various protective coatings, including tests of paints, dyes, exterior coatings, waxes, etc. Further, solar simulators can be used in various medical research applications. For example, solar simulators are often used in research for skin cancer, photobiological applications, phototoxicity, photoallergy testing, and various other medical applications. Furthermore, solar simulators are commonly used to determine the sun protection factor (SPF hereinafter) of various co...
