Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a battery open circuit voltage measurement using reverse current pulses. A battery management system for a vehicle includes a controller configured to apply a current pulse that reverses current flow through a battery to reduce or eliminate battery cell polarization. After the current pulse, the open circuit voltage is measured as the terminal voltage of the battery. After the current pulse, the settling time for the terminal voltage to approach the open circuit voltage is reduced. The magnitude of the current pulse is based on the battery state of charge, battery temperature, and current magnitude prior to the current pulse.
