Abstract

Systems and methods for implementing rapid channel changes in an adaptive streaming environment are disclosed. When starting a new stream of media content, the client device is adapted to send a request to transmit the media content encoded at the selected bit rate. Upon receiving encoded media content, the client device operates to immediately decode and render the media content regardless of the buffer status associated with the client device's video buffer. The client device is also operative to send a request to stream the media content encoded at the higher bit rate upon expiration of a certain time period.
