Embodiment Construction

[0021] Embodiments of apparatus, systems, and methods for color filter array (CFA) patterns to minimize color aliasing are described, as are image sensors used in conjunction with these CFAs. Specific details are described to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments, but one skilled in the relevant art will recognize that the invention may be practiced without one or more of the described details or with other methods, components, materials, etc. In some instances, well-known structures, materials, or operations are not shown or described in detail, but well-known structures, materials, or operations are still encompassed within the scope of the present invention.

[0022] Reference throughout this description to "one embodiment" or "an embodiment" means that the described feature, structure, or characteristic can be included in at least one described embodiment. Thus, appearances "in one embodiment" or "in an embodiment" are not necessarily both referring to the sa...

Abstract

The invention relates to a color filter array and an image sensor for reducing color aliasing. Embodiments of color filter arrays comprising a plurality of tiled minimal repeating units are disclosed. Each minimal repeating unit includes a set of individual filters grouped into an array of M rows by N columns, wherein each set of individual filters includes a filter having at least first, second, third, and fourth spectral photoresponses multiple individual filters. If M is equal to N, then at least two directions within each minimal repeating unit contain individual filters having all of said spectral photoresponses, said at least two directions being selected from the group consisting of Out: row, column, main diagonal and secondary diagonal. and if M≠N, then at least two directions within each of one or more NxN or MxM units within said minimal repeating unit comprise individual filters having all of said spectral photoresponses , the at least two directions are selected from the group consisting of: row, column, major diagonal and minor diagonal of each cell.

Description

technical field [0001] The disclosed embodiments relate generally to image sensors, and in particular, but not exclusively, to color filter array patterns for use with image sensors to minimize color aliasing. Background technique [0002] Image sensors are widely used in digital cameras, cellular phones, and security cameras, as well as in medical, automotive, and other applications. The technology used to fabricate image sensors, and in particular complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor ("CMOS") image sensors, has continued to evolve rapidly, and demands for higher resolution and lower power consumption have driven image Further miniaturization and integration of sensors. [0003] Conventional CMOS image sensors use a color filter array (CFA) with a set of primary colors, such as red, green, and blue (RGB), arranged in a so-called Bayer pattern. In some embodiments, clear pixels, also known as clear, transparent, or panchromatic pixels, may be included in the color filte...
