Problems solved by technology

However, in some powertrain configurations, torsional isolators are not sufficient to isolate torsional vibrations
For example, in powertrains with continuous engine torque pulsations, an increase in vibration amplitude and a decrease in vibration frequency occurs that known spring design isolators are insufficiently isolated from, thereby requiring improvements over known isolators

Embodiment Construction

[0023] The following description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the scope, application or uses of the invention.

[0024] Reference attached figure 1 A transmission drive system 10 for a motor vehicle includes a torsional vibration isolator 12 within a torque converter 14 for isolating engine torque pulsations between an engine drive component 16 and a transmission input shaft 18 .

[0025] The torque converter 14 generally includes a pump 20 , a turbine 22 and a stator (not shown) located within a torque converter housing 24 . Pump 20 is coupled to torque converter housing 24 and is driven by engine drive component 16 , such as a drive shaft. The turbine 22 is fluidly driven by the rotation of the pump 20 . A stator is located between pump 20 and turbine 22 and serves to multiply torque within torque converter 14 . The torque converter housing 24 is flexibly connected to the engine interface 26 , such as by fasteners passing through a flex plate...

Abstract

A torsional vibration isolator for a motor vehicle includes an input member having an engine drive component. The output member defines a transmission input shaft. The set of components connecting the input member to the output member includes a first spring engagement element connected to the ring gear. At least one pinion gear is engaged to the ring gear. The sun gear is engaged to the at least one pinion gear. The second spring engagement element is connected to the carrier, which is also connected to the at least one pinion. At least one spring is in contact with both the second spring engagement element and the first spring engagement element to allow angular deflection of the second spring engagement element and the carrier relative to the first spring engagement element.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a powertrain having a torsional vibration isolator or shock absorber, and more particularly to a powertrain having a planetary gear set incorporated into the vibration isolator to reduce the output of the engine and the transmission torsional vibration between the inputs. Background technique [0002] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may or may not constitute prior art. [0003] Motor vehicle engines generate undesirable torsional vibrations that are transmitted to the motor vehicle through the powertrain and driveline. Typically, torsional isolators or shock absorbers are used to isolate or reduce torsional vibrations transmitted from the engine to the transmission. A torsional isolator may be placed within the torque converter between the torque converter lock-up clutch and the input shaft of the transmission. Known torsional isolators use on...
