The method comprises: receiving a query message, sent by an IPTV terminal, of a DNS-SD protocol; determining whether the IPTV terminal is a new IPTV user based on the query message; if so, requesting an authentication code to the IPTV terminal; after determination of effectiveness of an authentication code sent by the IPTV terminal, sending configuration information to the IPTV terminal; and carrying out configuration by the IPTV terminal according to the configuration information. According to the invention, a built-in customized software module is not need by the IPTV terminal; automatic configuration of the IPTV terminal is realized by using a standard DNS service discovery protocol, so that the IPTV terminal can download the corresponding software module and configuration automatically. The requirement on the IPTV terminal is low. The method and equipment can be popularized and applied widely. And the user can select an IPTV terminal freely on the market.
