Embodiment approach

[0032] According to an exemplary embodiment, the torque box and base transfer loads from the aerial ladder assembly along the chassis of the five-piece construction fire apparatus. In one embodiment, the horizontal extension distance and vertical extension height of the moment box and the base expand the ladder assembly. Although some conventional fire trucks of five-piece construction have a ladder assembly mounted on a single rear axle chassis, the ladder assemblies of such fire trucks traditionally have a vertical extension of 75 to 80 feet and a horizontal extension of 67 to 72 feet. out of distance. The vertical extension height may include the distance from the highest rung of the ladder assembly to the ground when the ladder assembly is fully extended. The stick out distance may include the horizontal distance from the point of rotation (eg, the point of connection of the ladder assembly to the fire equipment, etc.) to the farthest rung with the ladder assembly extende...

Abstract

A fire apparatus of five-piece construction comprising: a chassis defining a longitudinal direction; a body assembly coupled to the chassis and having a storage area configured to receive a landing ladder and a fire hose; a pump coupled to said chassis; water tank coupled to said chassis; ladder assembly comprising a plurality of extendable ladder segments coupled to said chassis having a base and torque box; single front axle , the single front axle coupled to the front end of the chassis; and a single rear axle, the single rear axle coupled to the rear end of the chassis. The ladder assembly is extendable to provide a horizontal reach of at least 100 feet and a vertical height of at least 105 feet. The torque box extends in the longitudinal direction and spans the single rear axle to transfer loads along the chassis.

Background technique [0003] Five-piece construction firefighting equipment (eg, fire truck, etc.) includes an aerial ladder, water tank, landing ladder, water pump, and hose storage. Ladders can be classified according to their horizontal extension distance and vertical extension height. Traditionally, weight has been added to firefighting equipment (eg, by making various components heavier or larger, etc.) in order to increase the horizontal...
