Embodiment Construction

[0011] Apparatus or methods designed according to embodiments of the present invention utilize feedback information from at least one previous switching cycle to set an initial reference voltage value at the beginning of a switching cycle. The initial reference voltage value helps maintain the peak inductor current within selected limits in a manner independent of the ratio between the output voltage and the input voltage.

[0012] figure 1 A device 20 for controlling a switch 22 is schematically shown, the device 20 having an inductor 24 associated with the switch 22 . An inductor 24 is interposed between the switch 22 and a source 26 of the input voltage (Vi). The device 20 is configured as a switch mode power supply (SMPS) boost control circuit.

[0013] The switching cycle control element 30 activates or turns on the switch 22 at the beginning of the switching cycle. The example shown includes a pulse generator 32 operating at a selected frequency for controlling the le...

Abstract

The invention relates to switched mode power supply control. An illustrative example embodiment of a method is for controlling a switch (22). The switch (22) is used to charge a capacitor (34) that provides an output voltage. The switch (22) has an inductor (24) on an input side between a power source (26) and the switch (22). The method includes: initiating a switching cycle including turning on the switch (22), sensing a voltage representing current through the inductor (24), using a reference voltage as a basis for turning off the switch (22) during the switching cycle when the sensed voltage exceeds the reference voltage, and setting an initial value of the reference voltage at a beginning of the switching cycle based on at least one feature of an activation of the switch (22) during at least one previous switching cycle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to switch mode power supply control. Background technique [0002] A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) is useful for a variety of situations. A typical SMPS is configured to have an upper threshold on the output voltage. In some applications, a boost power supply is desirable where the output voltage is required to be twice the input voltage. Slope compensation can be used to provide stability to the current control loop of the SMPS. Known slope compensation techniques include adding a positive slope to the current sense voltage or a negative slope to the reference voltage. When the current sensing voltage exceeds the reference voltage, the switch is turned off. [0003] The magnitude of the slope required to dampen the transient step response in SMPS has been intensively studied. For a boost supply configuration, a function of the slope of the inductor current during the off-time of the switch provides a su...
