A method for operating an object detection system in a saw machine that produces a pattern of material used in a workpiece. The method includes: operating a motor in the saw machine to move a device and cut a workpiece formed of a predetermined material; recording a signal generated in the object detection system during contact between the workpiece and the device. sensing signals; generating a test pattern of the material of the workpiece based on the recorded sense signals; storing the test pattern in a memory in the saw machine; and using the test pattern to The saw machine and the object detection system are operated to differentiate between contact of the device with a workpiece formed of the predetermined material and contact of the device with a portion of an operator's body.
