This is based on time-of-flight (ToF) measurement frames transmitted by devices within the network. The accuracy of the ToF value can be improved by determining the relative clock drift value between the two devices so that timing errors caused by clock drift can be eliminated. ToF values between devices are available from a single broadcast measurement frame.

These symbols may be of a type known as pilots and specified in the IEEE 802.11 standard. This configuration reduces measurement overhead in networks especially for dense deployments.
