Embodiment 1
[0045] Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) was prepared as 10% and 15% by weight deionized water solutions. These solutions were mixed in a 1:1:1 weight ratio with a polyacrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium chloride solution (supplied as a 20% active solution as N-Durance 1000 from Ashland Chemical, with a weight average molecular weight of about 300,000) and Mix with deionized water. To avoid premature precipitation, the polymer solution was added to the mixture last. The low concentration of polymer in the STPP / water solution will cause the polymer to precipitate out if added earlier. In this example, STPP was added to the polymer followed by water. This produced a clear solution. The prepared solutions are shown in Table 1 below.

[0048] The solution is clear.
Embodiment 2
[0050] The solution from Example 1 was diluted 2-fold, 4-fold, 8-fold, 16-fold and 32-fold with deionized water. After dilution, the percent transmission of the samples was measured on a Turbiscan instrument. For the 15% STPP solution, 8-fold, 16-fold and 32-fold dilutions showed immediate precipitation with a transmittance of about 2%. In contrast, the 2-fold and 4-fold dilutions showed some initial precipitation with approximately 65% transmittance. For the 10% STPP solution, the results were similar: 8-fold, 16-fold and 32-fold dilutions showed immediate precipitation with approximately 2% transmission, while 2-fold and 4-fold dilutions showed some precipitation with approximately 65-67% transmission . The pH of the solution was also measured 30 minutes after dilution. The results are shown in Table 2 below.

Embodiment 3
[0054] Examples 1 and 2 were repeated with lower concentrations of polymer by using a 2.5% by weight solution of polyacrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium chloride instead of the 20% by weight solution in Example 1 and eliminating the additional water. STPP and polymer solution were mixed in a weight ratio of 1:1. The solutions prepared are shown in Table 3 below.
[0055] table 3
[0056]
[0057] The solution is clear. The solutions were diluted 2 times, 4 times, 8 times, 16 times and 32 times with deionized water. After dilution, the percent transmission of the samples was measured on a Turbiscan instrument. For the 15% STPP solution, the 8-fold, 16-fold and 32-fold dilutions again showed immediate precipitation. For the 10% STPP solution, the results were similar: 4-fold, 8-fold, 16-fold and 32-fold dilutions showed immediate precipitation.
