Embodiment Construction

[0026] Figure 1 and Figure 2 An example of a subcutaneously implantable and percutaneously adjustable fluid flow control device 10 is shown. The fluid flow control device 10 is intended for surgical implantation in a physiological shunt system, which is used to discharge fluid from one part of the body to another. For example, to connect the flow control device 10 in such a system, the flow control device 10 includes an inlet connector 12 and an outlet connector 14, which each receive one end of a surgical tube (not shown). The end of the surgical tube is inserted on the connectors 12 and 14 and only the inner part of the annular ridge formed near the end of each connector 12 and 14 is fixed on it by a single ligature.

[0027] When the flow control device 10 is used in a drainage system intended for the treatment of hydrocephalus, the inlet connector 12 is fluidly connected with a proximal catheter which is inserted into the ventricle containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through...

Abstract

A magnetic-based electronic valve reader 300 for determining the position and orientation of a magnet coupled to an implantable medical device to determine a setting of the device (e.g., a setting of a fluid flow control valve of the medical device) . The electronic valve reader includes an orientation sensing mechanism 630 provided and configured to enable the electronic valve reader to: 1) allow the electronic valve reader to and / or 2) during the reading process, provide an indication or warning to the clinician that the orientation of the electronic valve reader has changed to be within a predetermined angular acceptance threshold or window or the extent to which the predetermined angular acceptance threshold or window is exceeded. A system including the disclosed electronic valve reader and a method of reading the settings of the device are also disclosed.

Description

technical background [0001] The present disclosure relates to medical devices, and more particularly, to a magnetic-based electronic valve reader. [0002] Magnetic indicator tools or valve readers are used to determine the settings of implantable medical devices. Implantable medical devices may include a fluid flow control valve that controls the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in a patient's brain. Excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) caused by hydrocephalus or other reasons manifests itself as increased pressure in the brain. Reducing CSF pressure is therapeutically beneficial, and it is usually done by using a fluid flow control valve to discharge CSF from the ventricles of the brain. [0003] Implantable medical devices may include targets in the form of magnets. The magnet allows the tool set to determine the settings of the medical device and change the settings without removing the subcutaneous implanted device. The tool set generally includes a locato...
