[0149] Method of the invention

[0150] I- Materials and methods

[0151] group of subjects

[0152] Seventeen right-handed, nonsmoking, self-reported normal olfaction participants (19 to 33 years, 9 females) participated in the study. Because olfactory affective perception varies with culture, participants had to be native French speakers and spend most of their time in Switzerland or France so they could fit into the geographic context of GEOS.

[0153] Subjects had no psychiatric or neurological history and had normal or corrected-to-normal vision. The experiment was approved by the local ethics committee and performed according to the Declaration of Helsinki.

[0154] olfactory stimulation

[0155] Twelve different pleasant and unpleasant odorants (Table 1) supplied by Firmenich S.A. were used to elicit olfactory stimuli. The odors were stored in synthetic fiber tampons (1.3 cm diameter, such as those supplied by Burghart Messtechnik GmbH filled with the given odora...

Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of functional MRI (fMRI) for determining brain activation patterns for a group of subjects in response to different odor-elicited feelings (i.e., conscious emotions). A method for preparing a perfume by using the method of the present invention and a consumer product comprising said perfume are also part of the present invention.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine brain activation patterns in a group of subjects in response to specific odor-evoked sensations (ie, conscious emotions) and to distinguish activation patterns between different emotional feelings. [0002] Also part of the invention are processes for the preparation of fragrances by using the methods of the invention as well as consumer products comprising said fragrances. Background technique [0003] As a result of evolution, the olfactory system has preferential access to the emotional centers of the brain, providing odors with the ability to influence human behaviour, mood and decision-making. [0004] "Odor" or "smell" generally refers to the sensation caused by stimulation of the olfactory organs by one or several volatile chemical substances (odorants). [0005] It has long been known that there is a strong link between smell and emotion (Enge...
