[0091] Example 1 evaluated the ability of inhaled alprazolam to rapidly suppress photosensitivity in a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover proof-of-concept study. This study was a clinically randomized placebo-controlled double-blind five-crossover study design that allowed for a small patient size. Evaluate patients with epilepsy using an intermittent photostimulation model to screen for antiepileptic effects without eliciting seizures or convulsive responses. Three doses of alprazolam and placebo (twice) were studied in 5 subjects.

[0092] In patients with photosensitive epilepsy, generalized epileptiform EEG activity was elicited using intermittent light stimulation. Subjects are exposed to a certain frequency of light stimuli (flash frequency) and a range of photosensitivity is measured.
