Abstract

A system and method for constructing a multi-scale voxel representation of a three-dimensional (3D) sparse dot plot. The method includes the steps of: providing a 3D sparse point map; receiving coordinates of a 3D point from a 3D sparse point map; converting coordinates of the 3D point to integer coordinates; and when the integer coordinates are not included in any of the voxel entries of the hash table, adopting the scale level 0 to create a new unit voxel, wherein scale level 0 is the smallest voxel size; using the integer coordinates to calculate the hash value; inserting the new unit voxel into the hash table; and merging the new unit body with the adjacent voxels along the at least one axis of the integer coordinates to obtain the multi-scale voxel representation of the 3D sparse point map.
