271 results about "Advection" patented technology

In the field of physics, engineering, and earth sciences, advection is the transport of a substance or quantity by bulk motion. The properties of that substance are carried with it. Generally the majority of the advected substance is a fluid. The properties that are carried with the advected substance are conserved properties such as energy. An example of advection is the transport of pollutants or silt in a river by bulk water flow downstream. Another commonly advected quantity is energy or enthalpy. Here the fluid may be any material that contains thermal energy, such as water or air. In general, any substance or conserved, extensive quantity can be advected by a fluid that can hold or contain the quantity or substance.

Preferred embodiments relates to a cooling system and a method for cooling an electronic display. Embodiments include a transparent liquid cooling chamber, a reservoir tank, and a pump. The components in the system are preferably housed within the electronic display housing. The cooling chamber defines a fluid compartment that is anterior to and coextensive with the electronic display surface. Circulating coolant removes heat directly from the electronic display surface by advection. In order to view the display, the coolant fluid is transparent or at least semi-transparent. The image quality of an exemplary embodiment remains essentially unchanged, even though coolant is flowing over the visible face of the electronic display surface.

Method of simulating detailed movements of fluids using derivative particles

The method provides a new fluid simulation technique that significantly reduces the non-physical dissipation of velocity using particles and derivative information. In solving the conventional Navier-Stokes equations, the method replace the advection part with a particle simulation. When swapping between the grid-based and particle-based simulators, the physical quantities such as the level set and velocity must be converted. A novel dissipation-suppressing conversion procedure that utilizes the derivative information stored in the particles as well as in the grid points is developed. Through several experiments, the proposed technique can reproduce the detailed movements of high-Reynolds-number fluids, such as droplets / bubbles, thin water sheets, and whirlpools. The increased accuracy in the advection, which forms the basis of the proposed technique, can also be used to produce better results in larger scale fluid simulations.

Method for the numerical simulation of a physical phenomenon with a preferential direction

The invention provides a method of simulating behavior of a flow interacting with an object. The invention improves the accuracy of the approximation of the spatial pth derivative Dp, p≧1, and therefore reduces the cost of the simulation. It includes in the approximation values of the parameter at points which do not lay on grid lines passing through the point of computation P, and by using these values to optimize the approximation. The use of these additional points depends on a preferential direction, such as determined by the advection direction of the flow. The points used in the approximation extend beyond a unit cube on the computational grid. The simulation is in three or more dimensions. The numerical simulation produces output which can be used in the design or optimization of the object which interacts with the flow. In certain cases, it is the output by itself which is important.

Method of developing a sedimentary basin from a stratigraphic simulation of multilithologic filling taking account of fine sediment transport

The invention is a method of developing a sedimentary basin from a stratigraphic simulation of multilithologic filling accounting for fine sediment transport. The sedimentary basin is broken up into geologic layers with each geologic layer being subdivided into a series of climatic layers. Each climatic layer is associated with at least one constant climatic parameter. A stratigraphic simulation is performed within each climatic layer using a stratigraphic model. The sediment transport in the continental domain and sediment bottom layer transport in the marine and lacustrine domains are modelled using nonlinear diffusion equations under maximum erosion rate constraint. Suspended sediment transport in the marine and lacustrine domain is modeled using an advection-diffusion equation accounting for a particle fall rate and of a marine and lacustrine current velocity. The climatic layers belonging to a single geologic layer are then homogenized and the basin is developed according to the stratigraphic simulation results.

Numerical toolbox for design of fluidic components and systems

A described exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes a computational “toolbox” for the a priori design of optimized fluidic components. These components consist of a channel under low-Reynolds number, pressure-driven flow, with an arrangement of grooves cut into the top and / or bottom to generate a tailored cross-channel flow. An advection map for each feature (i.e., groove of a particular shape and orientation) predicts the lateral transport of fluid within the channel due to that feature. We show that applying these maps in sequence generates an excellent representation of the outflow distribution for complex designs that combine these basic features. The effect of the complex three-dimensional flow field can therefore be predicted without solving the governing flow equations through the composite geometry, and the resulting distribution of fluids in the channel is used to evaluate how well a component performs a specified task. The generation and use of advection maps is described, and the toolbox is applied to determine optimal combinations of features for specified mixer sizes and mixing metrics.
