Embodiment Construction

[0035] Embodiments of the present disclosure describe a hybrid wireless charging system for portable electronic devices. A hybrid wireless charging system may include a hybrid receiver / transmitter coil operable to receive power as well as transmit power. For example, a hybrid receiver / transmitter coil may be coupled to a hybrid charging circuit that may operate the hybrid receiver / transmitter coil to receive power when the portable electronic device is positioned on a charging surface of the wireless charging device. The hybrid charging circuit can also operate the hybrid receiver / transmitter coil to transmit power when the secondary electronic device is positioned on the charging surface of the portable electronic device. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, hybrid receiver / transmitter coils may be designed to be efficient in both received power as well as transmitted power, as will be discussed in further detail herein. In some embodiments, the hybrid wi...

Abstract

The invention relates to wireless charging systems for electronic devices. Embodiments describe a portable electronic device that includes a housing having an interface surface and an inductor coil disposed within the housing and comprising a conductive wire wound in a plurality of turns about a center point and in increasing radii such that the inductor coil is substantially planar. The portableelectronic device further includes charging circuitry coupled to the inductor coil and configured to operate the inductor coil to wirelessly receive power and wirelessly transmit power, control circuitry coupled to the charging circuitry and configured to instruct the charging circuitry to operate the inductor coil to wirelessly receive power and to wirelessly transmit power, and a device detection coil coupled to the control circuitry and configured to detect the presence of an external device on the charging surface, the device detection coil is configured to operate at a different frequencyfrom the inductor coil.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority to U.S. nonprovisional patent application 16 / 422,750, filed May 24, 2019, which claims U.S. provisional patent application 62 / 720,001, filed August 20, 2018, and claims Priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application 62 / 834,323, filed May 15, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. Background technique [0003] Portable electronic devices (eg, mobile phones, media players, electronic watches, etc.) operate when a charge is stored in their batteries. Some portable electronic devices include rechargeable batteries that can be recharged by coupling the portable electronic device to a power source through a physical connection, such as through a charging cord. However, using a charging cord to charge a battery in a portable electronic device requires that the portable electronic device be physically tethered to an electrical outle...
