Embodiment Construction

[0017] figure 1 An exemplary vehicle 102 is shown equipped with a set of ultrasonic parking aid sensors 104 and a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar antenna array 106 . For vehicles with driver assistance and autonomous driving functions, the type, number and configuration of sensors in a sensor arrangement vary. For example, at least some contemplated MIMO radar arrays for autonomous vehicles include four transmit antennas and eight or more receive antennas arranged to scan in front of, around, and behind the vehicle. Vehicles may employ sensor arrangements to detect and measure distance / direction to objects in various detection zones to enable the vehicle to navigate while avoiding other vehicles and obstacles.

[0018] figure 2 An electronic control unit (ECU) 202 is shown coupled to a radar array controller 205 and various ultrasonic sensors 204 as the center of the star topology. Of course, other topologies including serial, parallel and hierarchical (tree) t...

Abstract

Automotive radar systems may employ a reconfigurable connection of antennas (301, 302) to radar transmitters (TX-j) and / or receivers (RX-i). An illustrative embodiment of an automotive radar system includes: a radar transmitter (TX-1); a radar receiver (RX-1); and a digital signal processor (DSP) coupled to the radar receiver to detect reflections (S1,1) of a signal (S1) transmitted by the radar transmitter and to derive signal measurements therefrom. At least one of the radar transmitter and the radar receiver are switchable to provide the digital signal processor with signals from each of multiple combinations of transmit antenna (301) and receive antenna (302).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application 62 / 684,982, filed June 14, 2018, entitled "Reconfigurable MIMO Radar," by inventors Danny Elad, Ofer Markish, and Benny Sheinman. This provisional application is hereby incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] In the quest for safer and more convenient transportation options, many automakers are developing autonomous vehicles that require an impressive number and variety of sensors, often including arrays of acoustic and / or electromagnetic sensors, to monitor the distance between the car and any nearby people, pets, vehicles or obstacles. Sensing technologies envisioned include multiple-input multiple-output radar systems, but providing a sufficient number of transmitters and receivers for a fully performing antenna array can be cost prohibitive. The prior art fails to provide a satisfactory solution to this dilemma. Contents of t...
