Problems solved by technology

One difficulty related to tightness is that solder joints can be damaged due to the effect of heat, for example when soldering on relay connections
Also, relays are electromechanical components and by their nature are subject to wear and tear
For example, contact resistance may increase due to wear and tear of the contacts, and this may lead to increased heat generation and eventually leakage

Embodiment Construction

[0015] An exemplary embodiment of the invention has a base and a top. Here, the top covers / closes the surface of the substrate such that a cavity is created between this surface of the substrate and the top. Contacts for closing or opening an electrical circuit are provided in the cavity. Voltage can be applied to these contacts by means of connection terminals through the substrate. Due to this voltage, switching sparks or switching arcs can occur when closing or opening the contacts. This switching spark or switching arc can ignite the explosive mixture in the switching element and cause it to explode.

Abstract

Switch element for use in a potentially explosive area A switch element, e.g. a relay, for use in a potentially explosive area has a base plate and a top (302), defining a cavity housing the switch contacts. The switch element also has an opening to the outside and is otherwise sealed to the outside. The opening spreads any escaping explosive energy that is released during an explosion within theswitch element over a sufficiently long period of time such that the explosive energy escaping to the outside does not ignite the explosive mixture in the potentially explosive area. In prefered embodiments, the opening is a hole (305) covered by a grid (311) or mesh (312). Alternatively, the opening takes the form of a gap (105, 105') in the seam between the base plate (101) and the top (102) ortakes the form of a hole (205) with a biconical or meandering form.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the invention patent application with the application number 201580025236.3, the application date is May 4, 2015, and the invention title is "Switching Elements for Use in Potentially Explosive Areas". technical field [0002] The invention relates to switching elements for use in potentially explosive areas. The invention also relates to the use of switching elements in potentially explosive areas to connect electrical circuits and thereby prevent ignition of explosive mixtures present in potentially explosive areas due to switching arcs occurring within the switching elements. Background technique [0003] Switching elements, such as relays, which are used in potentially explosive areas (also referred to as "ex areas") are currently made such that explosive gas mixtures in potentially explosive areas cannot enter the interior of the switching elements. If an explosive mixture gets into the interior of the protective el...
