Problems solved by technology

However, as noted above, certain attributes of die design may introduce inefficiencies in the die or die plate manufacturing process or finishing process downstream of the cutting operation, without rendering the die inoperable or completely disrupting the process of making the die, But relative to a more efficient design, this can significantly reduce the throughput of the process in which the mold is used, or increase manufacturing time, or worsen the reliability of the mold or mold plate
Thus, the design may be exactly what the designer intended, but the designer may not be aware of the intended design at the cutting step, at the finishing operations downstream of the cutting step, or in the manufacture of the mold or die plate. Inefficiency

Embodiment Construction

[0061] Referring now to the drawings, various embodiments of the present invention relate to a design rule checker, and a method of design rule checking for computer aided design (CAD) files, including but not limited to A two-dimensional (2D) file that corresponds to the geometry of a die (such as a steel rule die) used to cut a sheet of material (such as used to create a package). While not limited to any particular process or operations in such a process for making an article, the focus of the invention relates to non-printing and non-platemaking operations. It should be noted that the term "design rule" used herein refers to the definition of the term "rule" as a specification governing the design, and the term "rule" used herein refers to a "ruler" as a rigid Definition of a strip of material. Although the term "steel ruler" is used for clarity and distinction, it should be understood that use of the term is not intended to limit the material of construction of the ruler...

Abstract

A method for performing a design rule check of a computer aided design (CAD) file corresponding to a geometry of a tool for use in a process for making an article from a starting material. Design rules defined to avoid a geometry of the tool documented as causing an inefficiency in a non-printing or non-platemaking operation of the process are stored in a computer. A design rule checking (DRC) module of the computer processes the CAD file relative to the stored design rules, identifies violations, automatically suggests design changes responsive to each violation, receives a user input responsive to suggested design changes, and modifies the CAD file in response to the user input. Non-transitory computer readable media containing code for implementing the method and related CAD systems arealso described.
