However, detecting the grounding of the other hand is difficult, let alone estimating its effect on the detected signal
Other factors, such as the driver's seat position, can also affect the detected signal, making the measurement less reliable

Embodiment Construction

[0026] figure 1 A steering wheel 20 is shown schematically with the sensor device 1 according to the invention, which can be used for hand position detection on the steering wheel 20 . The sensor arrangement 1 comprises a plurality of sensors 2 - 6 arranged along the surface 21 of the steering wheel 20 . In this embodiment, each sensor 2-6 comprises a single sensor electrode 2a-6a, but alternatively at least one sensor 2-6 may comprise a plurality of sensor electrodes 2a-6a. Each sensor electrode 2 a - 6 a is made of an electrically conductive material, such as a metal foil, which is arranged on an electrically insulating substrate and covered by an electrically insulating lining of the steering wheel 20 . The sensor electrodes 2a-6a of the different sensors 2-6 are spaced apart along the surface 21 of the steering wheel 20, wherein the spacing should be smaller than the typical size of the hand 31 to be detected. Thus, each sensor 2-6 corresponds to a different sensor area ...

Abstract

The invention relates to a sensor arrangement (1) for capacitive position detection of a hand (31) on a steering wheel (20), comprising: a plurality of capacitive sensors (2-6) disposed along a detection surface (21), which is an outer surface of the steering wheel (20), each sensor (2-6) comprising at least one sensor electrode (2a-6a); and a measurement device (10) electrically connected to the sensors (2-6). In order to increase the reliability of capacitive hand detection on a steering wheel, the invention provides that the measurement device (10) is adapted to perform a sequence of detection operations, and in each detection operation, to activate at least one sensor (2-6) by applying a detection signal to its at least one sensor electrode (2a-6a) in order to capacitively detect the hand (31) while grounding at least one other sensor (2-6) by connecting at least one of its sensor electrodes (2a-6a) to ground, and to activate different sensors (2-6) in consecutive detection operations.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention generally relates to a sensor arrangement for capacitive position detection of a hand on a steering wheel. Background technique [0002] In modern vehicles, it may be necessary to detect whether the driver has put his hands on the steering wheel (for example, to determine whether the driver is ready to make a steering maneuver). Steering assistance devices may include active correction possibilities for the driver to use in certain situations. For example, it can be provided that the steering assistance system is only activated when the driver has his hands on the steering wheel. In most countries it is mandatory for a moving vehicle to be under the driver's control, even though modern assistance systems are capable of operating the vehicle safely and autonomously in certain situations. [0003] In order to recognize whether at least one hand is on the steering wheel, several concepts have been developed. One concept relies on the EPS ...
