An interface method and apparatus using video images of hand gestures. A video signal having a frame image containing regions is input to a processor. A plurality of regions in the frame are defined and screened to locate an image of a hand in one of the regions. The hand image is processed to locate extreme curvature values, such as peaks and valleys, corresponding to predetermined hand positions and gestures. The number of peaks and valleys are then used to identify and correlate a predetermined hand gesture to the hand image for effectuating a particular computer operation or function.

This invention is an ergonomic method and apparatus for integrating the operation of computer keyboards and cursor control devices. It employs hand location detection to determine when the mouse hand is absent from its keyboard typing position or is present at the mouse. A detector output automatically transforms the functions of a set of keyboard keys lying under the non-mouse hand from their original actions into new actions which can include mouse clicks, keyboard shortcuts and macros. These keys usually include the home keys (a s d f, or j k l ;). The new functions are preprogrammed into this set of keys at an inactive level, and do not affect actions unless the hand position sensor detects that the mouse hand is absent from its keyboard typing position or is present at the mouse. This invention allows the non-mouse hand to actuate clicks at the keyboard by using the home keys as click switches, and also makes it possible for the non-mouse hand to type, with a single keystroke, keyboard shortcuts not normally available to it. When the mouse hand returns to the keyboard the keys automatically revert to their default functions. This method increases working speed, reduces the number of trips back and forth between keyboard and mouse, and relieves stress on the mouse hand. It is of special value to persons with carpal tunnel syndrome or Repetitive Strain Injuries. Detection of hand position or location is accomplished by sensors at the keyboard and/or at the pointing device, or by software detection of any data output from the mouse (movement or click) or from any keypress on the mouse side of the keyboard. This invention can be embodied solely as software, as firmware in an external device or keyboard, or as any combination of software and firmware. It essentially converts the non-mouse side of the keyboard into single-key macros: mouse buttons, tool selection keys, and special function keys. It can also be used to temporarily assign an alternate set of actions to mouse motion, mouse buttons and scrolling devices. Optionally this invention includes a floating on-screen palette which serves as an indicator of transformation and provides a map of the new functions. This enables eye-to-hand pattern transfer for intuitive tool selection via the keyboard without using the mouse.

A wearable electronic device for conveying information in an analog manner at least in part by the use of at least one display hand positioned on the dial side of a dial, wherein the wearable electronic device uses the display hand(s) to convey information that is stored in the controller of the device and/or provided by sensors and/or an external transmitter. An actuation mechanism, preferably a stepper motor, is used to rotate the display hands in the clockwise and/or counterclockwise directions in predefined increments to convey the information.

The present invention relates to a technology that allows a user to manipulate a virtual three-dimensional (3D) object with his or her bare hand in a wearable augmented reality (AR) environment, and more particularly, to a technology that is capable of detecting 3D positions of a pair of cameras mounted on a wearable display and a 3D position of a user's hand in a space by using distance input data of an RGB-Depth (RGB-D) camera, without separate hand and camera tracking devices installed in the space (environment) and enabling a user's bare hand interaction based on the detected 3D positions.

A method and system in a portable computer having a display screen for increasing portable computer compactness. Data is displayed initially within the display screen. The display screen is then partitioned into a touch-sensitive input area and a display area, wherein data input at the touch-sensitive input area may be simultaneously displayed in the display area, in response to a particular user input. A test is performed to detect if a user's hands are positioned at the touch-sensitive input area. A touch-sensitive pad is thereafter graphically displayed at the touch-sensitive input area within the display screen, in response to detecting a user's hands positioned at the touch-sensitive area, wherein a user may enter data that may be simultaneously displayed in the display area. An additional test may then be performed to detect if the user's hands are no longer positioned at the touch-sensitive input area. The touch-sensitive pad is subsequently concealed from view, in response to detecting if the user's hands are no longer positioned at the touch-sensitive input area. The touch-sensitive pad graphically displayed at the touch-sensitive input area within the display screen may be composed of a touch-sensitive keyboard, which may in and of itself be an ergonomic keyboard.

A biometrics system captures and processes a handprint image using a structured light illumination to create a 2D representation equivalent of a rolled inked handprint. The biometrics system includes an enclosure with a scan volume for placement of the hand. A reference plane with a backdrop pattern forms one side of the scan volume. The backdrop pattern is preferably a random noise pattern and the coordinates of the backdrop pattern are predetermined at system provisioning. The biometrics system further includes at least one projection unit for projecting a structured light pattern onto a hand positioned in the scan volume on or in front of the backdrop pattern and at least two cameras for capturing a plurality of images of the hand, wherein each of the plurality of images includes at least a portion of the hand and the backdrop pattern. A vehicle operating system that assists a vehicle operator with locating a control input of a vehicle device so as to minimize operator distraction when operating the vehicle device. The system includes a camera having a first perspective view of the control input, a display readily observed by the operator, and a processor configured to process a signal from the camera to determine a hand position of a hand approaching the control input and output a display signal having a second perspective view of the control input that is dependent on the operator's hand position relative to the control input. The second perspective view corresponds to that of a virtual camera attached to the operator's forearm or wrist, and so provides a perspective view that is substantially fixed relative to the hand.

A germicidal system and method for deactivating pathogens on the surface of a bodily extremity protected by a prophylactic covering substantially opaque to UV-C radiation. The device includes an enclosure having one or more openings through which the extremity can be inserted. The enclosure contains a radiation source configured to produce germicidal radiation having a wavelength of about 253.7 nm. The openings are configured relative to the radiation source such that the inserted extremity is in close proximity to the radiation source. The prophylactic covered extremity is preferably a gloved hand thereby sanitizing the surface of the glove. The extremity inserted is preferably exposed for a predetermined period of time to ensure a desired level of sanitization. A method for controlling a virtual keyboard on a display screen of a computerized system includes obtaining data from a touchpad. The data is associated with the location and movement of a finger and/or hand of a user when the user operates the computerized system using the touchpad. Examples display a soft keyboard on a touchscreen of a text-entry device. The touchscreen works with the soft keyboard as a form of text input.
