Problems solved by technology

However, even under normal coverage operation, absolute RSRP measurement accuracy is defined as ±7dB (i.e., the measured RSRP is accurate within ±7dB), which is rather rough
Using such measurements for random access procedures may lead to inaccurate decisions, which may result in increased network / UE resources

Abstract

When a wireless device obtains a request for a random access in a cell, based on information relating to at least one type of reference signal, it selects at least one type of reference signal. The wireless device then performs a measurement in said cell using the selected type or types of reference signal. Based on a result of the measurement, the wireless device selects a coverage enhancement level, and it then sends a random access message to the cell using radio resources associated with the selected coverage enhancement level.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a method performed by a wireless device for performing random access. Background technique [0002] Areas of interest in 3GPP involve technologies covering machine-to-machine (M2M) and / or Internet of Things (IoT) related use cases. 3GPP Release 13 and Release 14 include enhancements to support Machine Type Communication (MTC) with new User Equipment (UE) categories (i.e., Cat-M1, Cat-M2), thereby supporting 6 Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) (or for Reduced bandwidth of Cat-M2 up to 24 PRBs) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) UEs (and UE categories Cat-NB1 and Cat-NB2) providing a new radio interface. [0003] In this paper, we refer to the LTE enhancements introduced for MTC in 3GPP Release 13, Release 14, and Release 15 as "eMTC", including (but not limited to) support for bandwidth-constrained UEs (Cat-M1), and Support for overlay enhancements. This is to separate this discussion from NB-IoT (the notation here is for any...
