Abstract

A method of autonomously charging an electric vehicle having a charging port is provided. The method includes providing a charging system having a first controller and a second controller. The first controller is in communication with the charger and the movable charging arm. A movable charging arm is connected to the charger and extends to an arm end including a charging plug and a camera. The movable charging arm has an idle position defining a charging area, and is movable by a predetermined number of degrees of freedom to connect the charging plug with the charging port for charging the electric vehicle. The second controller is disposed in the vehicle and is in communication with the first controller. The method further includes aligning the charging port with the charging area by vehicle movement, and aligning the charging plug with the charging port by charging arm movement. The method further includes connecting a charging plug to the charging port to charge the electric vehicle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to charging devices for vehicles, and more particularly to autonomous charging systems and methods for charging electric vehicles. Background technique [0002] As electric vehicles become more common in the industry, charging equipment for charging electric vehicles is improving. Current charging devices (such as wireless charging) have high energy consumption and low efficiency. Also, current equipment is massive, resulting in high manufacturing and operating costs. Contents of the invention [0003] Therefore, there is a need for a new and improved system and method for autonomous charging of electric vehicles while current devices serve their intended purpose. [0004] One aspect of the present disclosure discloses a method of autonomously charging an electric vehicle having a charging port. The method includes providing a charging system having a first controller and a second controller. A first controller is i...
