Problems solved by technology

[0009] A disadvantage of using this method is that it does not take into account the question of whether a station wishing to transmit a packet failed or succeeded in a previous attempt to transmit a packet
Thus, a station that frequently fails to transmit will continue to fail

Embodiment Construction

[0037] In a cellular radio communication system with packet data exchange, each cell may, for example, use a specific channel for packet data exchange. There may be one or more such channels in the wireless communication system. Packet data is transmitted in bursts, and the transmission rate from a base station or a mobile station transmitting packet data can be described in terms of transmission probabilities. The transmission probability gives the percentage of a time period in which the sending station transmits packets.

[0038] If the same channel is used simultaneously by at least two sending stations (ie, base stations or mobile stations) for packet data transmissions, the receiving station will be affected by both transmissions, thus introducing co-channel interference. If the co-channel interference along with other possible interference is very strong, the reception of the packet will fail. After the reception of a packet transmitted by a base station or a mobile s...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a device and a method for packet switching in a cellular radio communication system. Radio stations that have packets to transmit, transmit packets with a particular transmission probability (Si,n). The fraction of the transmitted packets that are received correctly by the receiving radio station, the so-called throughput fraction (ti,n), can be calculated. The transmission probability (Si,n) for a transmitting radio station is continuously updated according to a mapping function (f(a)) that depends on the value of the throughput fraction (ti,n). According to the invention a mapping function (f(a)), with a derivative with an absolute value less than one, is chosen (201). Starting values of the throughput fraction (ti,n) are generated (203) and these values are input to the mapping function. Updated values of the transmission probability (Si,n) are generated (204) by mapping function. The transmitting radio station transmits (205) packets according to the updated transmission probability, whereby a new value of the throughput fraction is generated (206). The method is repeated until the values of the throughput fraction are stable.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to packet switching in a cellular radio communication system, and more particularly to an apparatus and a method for packet data transmission in each cell to make the system stable against co-channel interference. Background technique [0002] In a cellular wireless communication system adopting packet data exchange, there is no dedicated connection for each packet exchange. When a sending station wishes to transmit packets, it should be able to use as much capacity as the system can handle. For example, throughout a wireless communication system, one or more channels may be dedicated to packet data exchange. In this way, all sending radio stations can use the channel or channels when packet data needs to be transmitted. In this way, the remaining channels can be used, for example, to transmit circuit-switched speech. The packet data flow in a cell is not continuous, but in the form of bursts. It may happen that the sa...
