Embodiment Construction

[0035] The present invention provides an efficient and simple one-shot adaptive quantization technique executable by a video encoder. The method of the present invention was developed in Sharp's MPEG2 LSI video codec. However this technique can be applied to any video coding application where quantization can be changed within a frame. The preferred embodiment uses one-pass encoding, but alternative embodiments may use multiple passes.

[0036] The present invention overcomes the shortcomings of the prior art by introducing bit rate prediction to adaptive quantization. The present invention calculates the impact of quantization changes on the bit rate required to encode a video frame, and adjusts the QP for macroblocks within a frame accordingly. More specifically, the present invention utilizes the following novel technological steps:

[0037] 1. In flat, low-textured parts that can be coded in more detail with a relatively small increase in bits, the QP is reduced.

Abstract

A method for adaptive quantization of video frames based on bit rate prediction that includes increasing quantization (12) in sectors of a video frame where coding artifacts would be less noticeable to the human visual system and decreasing quantization (14) in sectors where coding artifacts would be more noticeable to the human visual system. In one embodiment the method reverts to uniform quantization (18) for video frames in which adaptive quantization would require extra bits.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for digitally encoding video signals using adaptive quantization techniques that optimize perceived video quality while preserving bits. The invention can be applied to any video coding application where quantization can be modified within a video frame. Background technique [0002] MPEG standard [0003] The Motion Pictures Experts Group ("MPEG") has standardized the syntax of a coded representation of video. For decoding only the bitstream syntax is specified. This brings flexibility to the design of encoders, which may optimize performance through increased sophistication. The MPEG standard also strikes a balance between optimizing image quality and keeping bit rates low. [0004] The MPEG video bitstream syntax provides tools called quantization parameters ("QP") for modulating the step size of a quantizer or data compressor. In typical video encoding, the quality and ...
