[0050] overview

[0051] The present invention relates to a system and method for analyzing and imaging 3D volume data sets using a three-dimensional ("3D") sampling probe. A set of 3D volume data includes "voxels" or volume elements. Each voxel is a sample or point within a volume. Each voxel can be represented in the form of (x, y, z, data value), where "x, y, z" represents the 3D position of the point in the body, and "data value" is some measurement or calculation for a specific point in the body The numerical or physical parameter of an attribute. For example, a collection of 3D volumetric data suitable for use in the present invention is 3D seismic data. Each voxel in the 3D seismic data can be represented by (x, y, z, amplitude), with amplitude corresponding to the amplitude of the reflected acoustic wave at a particular (x, y, z) location.

[0052] Any form of information that can be represented in voxels of (x, y, z, data values) is suitable for use with the prese...

Abstract

A system and method is provided for quickly tracking a physical phenomena represented within the three-dimensional volume data set. A plurality of planes may be successively displayed in the three-dimensional volume data set from which points are digitized related to the structure of interest to create a spline curve on each plane. The area between the spline curves is interpolated to produce a surface representative of the structure of interest, which may for example be a fault plane described by the three-dimensional volume data set. In this manner, the user can more easily and effectively visualize and interpret the features and physical parameters that are inherent in the three-dimensional volume data set.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to imaging of three-dimensional ("3D") volume data sets. More specifically, the present invention relates to rapid visualization and analysis of structures in 3D volumetric data sets. Background technique [0002] Analysis and imaging of three-dimensional ("3D") volume data sets are required in many fields of research. For example, in the medical field, CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) scanners or MRI equipment are used to produce "pictures" or diagnostic images of parts of a patient's body. A scanner or MRI device produces a 3D volumetric data set to be imaged or displayed so that medical personnel can analyze the images and make a diagnosis. [0003] Three-dimensional volume datasets are also used in many fields of research involving the earth sciences. Seismic sounding is a method used to explore the earth's subsurface geology. Subterranean blasts or earthquakes excite seismic waves similar to low-frequency...
