Abstract

A cold gas generator for inflating a gas bag with the aid of a gas flowing from a gas pressure container (7). The gas pressure container (7) is provided with an outlet (1) which is sealed by a destructible membrane (2) which is domed in the opposite direction in relation to the stored gas. The membrane (2) is destroyed by means of a jet of hot gas which is directed onto the membrane (2) and which is exclusively produced by igniting an ignition pellet (4) which can be activated by applying an electrical pulse. In order to provide a cold gas generator whose structure includes a simple operating mechanism, offering a high degree of security for the passengers and which inflates the gas bag without destroying or damaging it, when the gas pressure container (7) is in a filled state, the surface (6a) of the membrane (2) opposite said container is fully directed in an open manner towards an area (12) which is connected to the gas bag via at least one outlet (11), through which area the jet of hot gas focussing on the membrane (2) from a nozzle chamber can be guided (5).
