Problems solved by technology

[0007] Since the RGB signal may now have two different functions (just the OSD, or the main image), it may happen that a circuit or device is designed for only one of these two functions, and therefore the circuit or device cannot use the other a function

Embodiment Construction

[0024] FIG. 1 shows a video recorder component that records a video sequence received on a SCART connector 2 on a hard disk drive 14. As shown in FIG. Of course, the present invention is not limited to this type of media, but any type of media can be used for recording, such as DVD or tape.

[0025] The connector 2 has several plugs, mainly CVBS plug 20, R plug 15, G plug 11, B plug 7, and FB plug 16.

[0026] The CVBS plug 20 is used to receive a CVBS signal from another video device, such as a video tape recorder (VCR) in playback mode, or a satellite, cable, or terrestrial decoder, which generates a CVBS signal from a compressed digital stream .

[0027] R, G, B plugs 15, 11, 7 are used to receive RGB signals from other devices. These RGB signals can only represent part of the video screen, as an OSD signal superimposed on the main video sequence represented by the CVBS signal, or as a complete video sequence to represent the entire video screen.

[0028] The FB plug 16 carries...

Abstract

A video apparatus has a connector for receiving a video signal and having at least a first pin carrying a first signal, at least a second pin carrying a second signal and at least a third pin carrying a signal indicative of which of the first signal and the second signal defines the video signal at a given point in time. The first pin and the second pin are coupled to a video circuit able to operate with at least two types of video signal. A detection circuit connected to the third pin determines a characteristic of the video signal based on the indicative signal, and control means responsive to said characteristic sends a control signal whereby the video circuit is forced to operate with one of said types of video signal.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to video devices. Background technique [0002] The video sequence can be represented as a video signal according to several standards. [0003] The first known standard is a composite video blanking signal (hereinafter referred to as CVBS), which includes a single signal in which a luminance signal is multiplexed in frequency with a chrominance signal composed of two chrominance components. [0004] According to another well-known standard, a video sequence is represented by a red signal, a green signal, and a blue signal (RGB standard). [0005] In the past, RGB signals were mainly used for two purposes: First, in a video display (such as a TV), the received CVBS signal is converted into an RGB signal by a video circuit, and then each component of the video signal is fed to the cathode ray tube Corresponding electron gun; second, from one video device to another video device, using RGB signals to describe the image that will ...
