Embodiment Construction

[0012] According to one aspect of the invention, workload balancing is performed in a grid computing environment. In one example, a manager daemon of the grid computing environment obtains information about one or more systems in the environment and determines the placement of workloads among the systems based on the obtained information. Placement of workloads may include, for example, swapping jobs from one system to another or initially placing jobs on a particular system, among others. For example, the information is obtained from the scheduler of the system.

[0013] Grid computing allows the virtualization of distributed computing and data resources, such as data processing, network bandwidth, and storage capabilities, to create a single system image that grants users and applications seamless access to massive information technology (IT) capabilities. The individual systems of a grid computing environment are often heterogeneous systems. That is, at least one of the p...

Abstract

Balancing the workload of a grid computing environment. A manager daemon obtains information from a plurality of schedulers of a plurality of systems of the grid computing environment and uses that information to balance the workload of the environment. The information includes an indication of free resources, idle jobs, and possibly other information.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to grid computing, and more particularly to workload management in a grid computing environment. Background technique [0002] A grid computing environment allows the interconnection of multiple heterogeneous and / or geographically distant systems. In one example, the Globus toolkit provided by International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, New York, was used to facilitate interconnection between systems. Globus enables a user to specify which of the multiple systems will run a job. Users submit jobs to selected systems using a resource specification language (Resource Specification Language, RSL). Globus receives this RSL and converts it into the appropriate format understood by the scheduler on the target system. For example, if the scheduler is the LoadLeveler provided by International Business Machines Corporation, then the RSL will be converted into a command file. [0003] Because, or despite, user...
