Embodiment Construction

[0023] figure 1 A code reader 10 is shown operating in accordance with the present invention. The code reader 10 includes a housing 11 containing active components, including circuitry to perform the functions described below. A display 13 is provided on the housing 11 and displays test results, code reader functions and monitor status information as described more fully below.

[0024] Erase button 15 is used to erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and still frame data and reset monitor status. Scroll button 17 is used to scroll display 13 to view diagnostic trouble codes when more than one DTC is present.

[0025] Link button 19 is used to link the code reader with the vehicle powertrain control module (PCM) to retrieve if any DTCs are present in memory, and to view the ready monitor status. The power button 21 operates to switch the code reader on and off.

[0026] see figure 2 , the display 13 is shown in more detail. The display includes various icons as described...

Abstract

A method of displaying automotive diagnostic information is disclosed, comprising connecting a code reader (10) to a vehicle computer, and communicating monitor status information (23) and fault codes (33) to the code reader (10). Only the monitor functions supported by the vehicle and their status (23) are illuminated on the code reader (10). The fault codes (33) and fault code descriptors (35) communicated from the vehicle are also displayed. All display functions are independent of any human input identifying the type of vehicle being tested.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to methods and systems for diagnosing a vehicle, and more particularly to displaying diagnostic trouble codes generated by an on-board computer system. Background technique [0002] Modern vehicles include a computer control system. The main purpose of the vehicle's computerized control system is to provide the maximum possible engine performance and fuel efficiency with minimum air pollution emissions. The computer control system consists of an onboard computer and associated electronic control devices (sensors, switches, and actuators). The control device may control various systems and / or subsystems in the vehicle. These electronic controls send information about such parameters as the temperature and density of the outside air, the speed of the engine, the amount of fuel released, etc. to the onboard computer. At the same time, the onboard computer scans its sensors for any problems. If a problem is detec...
