Embodiment Construction

[0032] For the following description and appended claims, the relative term "proximal end" refers to those parts of the catheter and components of the catheter that are closest to the catheter insertion end, that is, the insertion of the catheter into the body of the patient being catheterized. The end of a region, such as a blood vessel. Conversely, the relative term "distal end" refers to those parts of the catheter and components of the catheter that are furthest from the end where the catheter is inserted.

[0033] Figure 1 shows a double Y multilumen catheter 10 according to the present invention. Catheter 10 includes a proximal end 34 for insertion into a patient and a distal end 36 for connection to a fluid exchange device such as a dialysis machine or the like. Catheter 10 includes an elongated central multi-lumen tube portion 12 , proximal single-lumen extension tubes 14 , 16 and distal single-lumen extension tubes 18 , 20 . In the illustrated embodiment, the centra...

Abstract

The invention discloses a multi-lumen catheter (10) and a method for inserting the multi-lumen catheter. The catheter (10) includes a central elongated multilumen tube (12) having a distal end and a proximal end. The central tube (12) has a substantially cylindrical shape and is internally segmented into chambers. A distal branch includes a plurality of single-lumen distal extension tubes (18, 20). A proximal branch includes a plurality of single lumen proximal extension tubes (14, 16). Each proximal extension tube (14, 16) has a distal first end and a proximal second end. The distal first end of each proximal extension tube (14, 16) is connected to the proximal end of the central tube portion (12) such that the single lumen of each distal extension tube (14, 16) is connected to the central tube portion (12). ) in fluid communication with one of the multiple cavities. Selectively attachable connector receptacles (72, 74) are provided for selectively attaching to distal extension tubes (18, 20) and connecting catheter (10) to a fluid exchange device.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending US patent application 10 / 086,033, filed February 28, 2002, which is a continuation-in-part of co-pending US patent application 09 / 769,052, filed January 24,2001. technical field [0003] The present invention relates broadly to a medical device and in particular to a multi-lumen catheter comprising Y-shaped distal and proximal ends and including a selective coupling for selectively connecting the catheter to a fluid exchange device. ground-attached receptacle. Background technique [0004] Catheters are generally hollow, flexible tubes for insertion into body cavities, lumens, or blood vessels to enable passage of fluids or to dilate a passageway. Catheters are often used for temporary or long-term dialysis treatment. Dialysis treatment provides for the removal of blood from a patient, cleansing it, and returning it to the patient. Thus in dialysis treatment the catheter enables t...
