Problems solved by technology

[0006] Applicants have recognized that although automated pharmacies significantly increase speed and efficiency relative to manual systems, and reduce error rates (eg, typically 1 in 300,000), manual placement of labels on packages inevitably leads to random error, this random error can add about one in 5000 to the total error rate
Often, human error occurs due to the fact that multiple packages are conveyed within a short time interval and thus multiple labels are printed, occasionally accidental swapping of labels and packages occurs

Embodiment Construction

[0037] Referring first to Figure 1, a portion of the automated pharmacy system of the present invention is shown. A storage area comprising a number of shelves 2 accommodates inventories of pharmaceutical packages (not shown). When the packages are loaded into the pharmacy, they are not stored in any predetermined device, but in the smallest available space where they can be accommodated. The robotic arm 4 is used to lift the packages and place them on the rack 2 as they enter the pharmacy and are subsequently sought for dispensing. The robotic arm 4 is controlled by a computer which holds a database recording the location of each package and its size and an inventory identifying its contents. This enables the arm 4 to calculate and place the most recently stocked package in an optimal position.

[0038] At one end of the shelf 2 is a labeling station 6 which will be described in detail below. Downstream of the labeling station 6 is a dispensing chute 8 from which pharmacy ...

Abstract

An automated pharmaceutical dispensing system comprises means (4) for selecting and retrieving a pharmaceutical pack (38). The means are arranged to deliver the pack (38) to a labelling station (6). The labelling station (6) comprises a label printer (18) arranged to print a label (36) comprising information specific to a patient for whom the pharmaceutical pack is intended, and a label applicator (22) for applying the label (36) to the pack (38). The system further comprises means (8) for delivering the pack (38) from the labelling station (6) so as to be accessible to a user. The label applicator (22) is arranged to apply the label (36) at a predetermined position on the pack (38), the position being variable from one pack type to another. The means (4) for selecting and retrieving the pack and the labelling station (6) are connected to a common control means arranged to coordinate the retrieval of the pack (38) and the passing of information to the labelling station (6) to enable the label applicator (22) to apply the label (36) in the predetermined position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to automatic dispensing systems, in particular to automatic dispensing systems suitable for dispensing pharmaceutical preparations. Background technique [0002] Automated pharmacies provide fast, accurate and efficient means of storing and dispensing pharmaceutical preparations in facilities such as hospitals that may process hundreds or thousands of prescription forms each day, and have thousands of different prescriptions in packages of various shapes and sizes. Inventory of medicines. [0003] The automated pharmacy system as provided by the applicant can store any standard size drug packages. Details of the contents of the package are automatically entered into the system by scanning the barcode on the package. Next, use a look-up table of pre-stored dimensions and use the barcode information to determine the size of the packaged item. Package input modules for measuring incoming packages are also known. [0004] ...
