Virtual machines of a virtual data center generate runtime instances with a software image, hardware configuration, management configuration and user/service configuration. Virtual data center resource use is monitored by reference to the management configuration of runtime instances, such as for environmental controls like power, cooling and balancing, or for policy limitations on users, software or hardware. Users or services generate runtime instances of stored virtual machines by reference to the user/service configuration, such as pricing or priority. In one example embodiment, the virtual machine software image comprises an application system preparation file that populates a read only application image common to plural virtual machines. Information unique to each virtual machine with respect to the application is maintained in the user/service configuration of the virtual machine and version information is maintained in the management configuration of the virtual machine. Updates to the application across each virtual machine are performed by updating the read only image or any of its configuration information for hardware configuration, management configuration or user/service configuration.

An architecture and system are described that provide a unified file access service within in a managed computing environment composed of diverse networks, computing devices, and storage devices. The service provides mechanisms for remotely accessing the file systems of any managed computer or disk snapshot, independently of the computer's current state (powered on, suspended or powered off), its location within the environment, its hardware type (virtual vs. physical), its operating system type, and its file system formats. The system isolates centralized FPAs from the details of clients, proxies and storage elements by providing a service that decomposes offloaded file system access into two steps. A FPA or a requester acting on behalf of the FPA first expresses the disk set or the computer containing the file systems it wishes to access, along with requirements and preferences about the access method. The service figures out an efficient data path satisfying the FPA's needs, and then automatically configures a set of storage and computing resources to provide the data path. The service then replies with information about the resources and instructions for using them. The FPA then accesses the requested file systems using the returned information.

A system and method for developing an application for serving a document to a client in a client/server network employs an Object Model which defines templates, extensions, documents, and content objects in a template inheritance model. The Object Model serves a document, such as a webpage of a Web site application, by combining the structure and content inherited from a template and extensions in the template hierarchy. The templates specify the structure of the document and include tags as placeholders for content objects to be incorporated in the document. Extensions descend from either a template or another extension, and can expand upon the number of tags specified in a parent, add additional formatting to the layout, and/or refine the definition of tags that already exist in the inheritance hierarchy. When a document is to be viewed or served, a page server retrieves the template hierarchy and incorporates all tagged content in the structure inherited from the template and its extensions. An improved system and method is provided for managing system-level privileges and for granting access rights to system resources within a data processing system. System-level privileges are assigned directly to individual users. In contrast, access rights are assigned to individual users and/or to groups of users using data constructs known as Access Control Records (ACRs). Each ACR associates one or more user groups and/or one or more individual users with a set of access rights. A system resource is then associated with an ACR. The users identified within the associated ACR are thereby granted access to the object using the access rights specified by the ACR. An ACR may define multiple sets of access rights, with each set of access rights being associated with one or more user groups and/or one or more individual users.
