A monetary transaction system consistent with the present disclosure comprises a mechanism allowing a biller to generate at least one invoice for at least one customer, where the invoice contains a unique bar code, comprising data identifying at least the customer and the biller, and a scanning apparatus and associated components, for use by a third party, configured both to scan the bar code and, based on the identifying data of the bar code, to effect payment to the biller in a predetermined or customer-specified amount. In method form, a bill payment method consistent with the disclosure comprises: generating a biller invoice for at least one customer, said invoice containing a unique bar code, said bar code comprising data identifying at least said customer and said biller; and enabling a third party to scan and process said bar code and, based on the identifying data of said bar code, to effect payment to said biller in a predetermined or customer-specified amount. In another embodiment, a bill payment system consistent with the disclosure comprises mechanisms allowing a plurality of billers to generate bar coded invoices, with each biller generating an invoice for at least one customer, the invoice comprising a unique bar code comprising data identifying at least the customer and the biller, and networked mechanisms allowing a plurality of third parties, in communication with said billers, to scan and process a given bar code and, based on the identifying data of said bar code, to effect payment to its associated biller in a predetermined or customer-specified amount.

Apparatus and method for freezing the states of a receiver during silent line state operation of a network device

A method for maintaining the states of a receiver during the silent line state of a network device operating in a low power link suspend mode is presented. Accordingly, a method of freezing the states of the equalizer and keeping the receiver clock locked to a frequency that is approximately equal to that of the input data while providing for rapid adjustment to the phase and thus recovery of the input data is presented. During Silent Line State (SLS), the receiver states are frozen using methods that avoid parasitic decay. Also, the receive clock phase lock loop is locked onto the local transmit clock since the local transmit clock has a frequency approximating the incoming data frequency. During the SLS, the transmitter of the remote network device may have been turned off to conserve power therefore the receiver has no way of immediately knowing the phase of an incoming data. Thus, in order to prevent loss of data, the receiver loops of the receiving network device are trained to the frequency of the transmitting remote network device using periodic Link Suspend packets. Thus, in most cases, only the phase of the incoming signal need be acquired when data arrives. The phase may be quickly acquired using loop bandwidth shift methods whereby the receive clock phase lock loop bandwidth is increased to a value that aids rapid acquisition of the input clock and then, after acquisition, the bandwidth is shifted to a low value to enhance noise rejection during tracking.

System and method for social networking in a virtual space

Social networking in a virtual space over a network is facilitated. Subscriber computing devices each operated by a subscriber are associated with a subscriber identifier. Each computing device is connected to the network. A subscriber profile is created in a profile datastore, wherein the subscriber profile comprises information about the subscriber and wherein the subscriber profile is associated with the subscriber's subscriber identifier. Subscriber identifiers associated with subscribers who are logged in to a website are monitored. The website defines a virtual space and the logged-in subscribers are characterized as present in the virtual space. A web page is served to the computing devices of the present subscribers via the network. The web page of a first subscriber comprises a first subscriber icon associated with the first subscriber and subscriber icons of other present subscribers. A determination is made whether the first subscriber profile matches the subscriber profile of one or more of the other present subscribers according to matching criteria. An attribute is assigned to the icons of the other present subscribers that match the profile of the first subscriber according to matching criteria. Selected profile information is provided to the first subscriber of a selected one of any of the other present matching subscribers.
