Object location system and method

An RF object locating system and method that uses or includes a set of N (N>2) receivers (monitoring stations) located at fixed positions in and / or about a region to be monitored, one or more reference transmitters that transmit a timing reference, a location processor that determines object location based on time-of-arrival measurements, and at least one object having an untethered tag transmitter that transmits RF pulses, which may additionally include object ID or other information. Free-running counters in the monitoring stations, whose phase offsets are determined relative to a reference transmitter, are frequency-locked with a centralized reference clock. Time-of-arrival measurements made at the monitoring stations may be stored and held in a local memory until polled by the location processor. The invention permits rapid acquisition of tag transmissions thereby enabling the monitoring of large numbers of objects, and also provides a unique approach to data correlation in severe multipath environments.

Use of mobile stations for determination of base station location parameters in a wireless mobile communication system

In a wireless communication network, base station antenna positions and time offsets are stored in a base station almanac data base along with other information used for obtaining the most reliable mobile station position fixes under a variety of conditions. The system uses the position fixes of mobile stations and terrestrial ranging information to determine base station antenna positions and base station timing offsets. The base station antenna positions are determined during normal mobile station position determinations, in order to maintain and improve the antenna location data, and to correct for change or relocation of the base station antennas. It is possible to recover quickly from a loss of cell sector identity during relocation of a base station antenna, and to ensure accuracy of mobile station position determination based on ranging from the base stations, and rapid acquisition of position data from mobile stations having global satellite receivers.

Method for using rapid acquisition spreading codes for spread-spectrum communications

A multiple access, spread-spectrum communication system processes a plurality of information signals received by a radio carrier station over telecommunication lines for simultaneous transmission over a radio frequency channel as a code-division-multiplexed signal to a group of subscriber units. The radio carrier station receives a call request signal that corresponds to a telecommunication line information signal, and a user identification signal that identifies a user to receive the call. The radio carrier station includes a plurality of CDMA modems, one of which provides a global pilot code signal. The modems provide message code signals synchronized to the global pilot signal. Each modem combines an information signal with a message code signal to provide a code division multiplexed signal. The RCS includes a system channel controller is coupled to receive a remote call. A radio frequency transmitter is connected to all of the modems to combine the code division multiplexed processed signals with the global pilot code signal to generate a code division multiplexed signal. The transmitter also modulates a carrier signal with the code division multiplexed signal and transmits the modulated carrier signal through a radio frequency communication channel to the subscriber units. Each subscriber unit includes a CDMA modem which is also synchronized to the global pilot signal. The CDMA modem despreads the code division multiplexed signal and provides a despread information signal to the user. The system includes a closed loop power control system for maintaining a minimum system transmit power level for the radio carrier station and the subscriber units, and system capacity management for maintaining a maximum number of active subscriber units for improved system performance.

Method and apparatus for pseudo-projection formation for optical tomography

A system for optical imaging of a thick specimen that permits rapid acquisition of data necessary for tomographic reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3D) image. One method involves the scanning of the focal plane of an imaging system and integrating the range of focal planes onto a detector. The focal plane of an optical imaging system is scanned along the axis perpendicular to said plane through the thickness of a specimen during a single detector exposure. Secondly, methods for reducing light scatter when using illumination point sources are presented. Both approaches yield shadowgrams. This process is repeated from multiple perspectives, either in series using a single illumination / detection subsystem, or in parallel using several illumination / detection subsystems. A set of pseudo-projections is generated, which are input to a three dimensional tomographic image reconstruction algorithm.

Apparatus and method for freezing the states of a receiver during silent line state operation of a network device

A method for maintaining the states of a receiver during the silent line state of a network device operating in a low power link suspend mode is presented. Accordingly, a method of freezing the states of the equalizer and keeping the receiver clock locked to a frequency that is approximately equal to that of the input data while providing for rapid adjustment to the phase and thus recovery of the input data is presented. During Silent Line State (SLS), the receiver states are frozen using methods that avoid parasitic decay. Also, the receive clock phase lock loop is locked onto the local transmit clock since the local transmit clock has a frequency approximating the incoming data frequency. During the SLS, the transmitter of the remote network device may have been turned off to conserve power therefore the receiver has no way of immediately knowing the phase of an incoming data. Thus, in order to prevent loss of data, the receiver loops of the receiving network device are trained to the frequency of the transmitting remote network device using periodic Link Suspend packets. Thus, in most cases, only the phase of the incoming signal need be acquired when data arrives. The phase may be quickly acquired using loop bandwidth shift methods whereby the receive clock phase lock loop bandwidth is increased to a value that aids rapid acquisition of the input clock and then, after acquisition, the bandwidth is shifted to a low value to enhance noise rejection during tracking.

Rapid acquisition methods and apparatus for GPS signals

A method and apparatus for receiving a signal from transmitters such as GPS satellites, for fixing the location of the receiver. Each of the transmitted signals includes a unique periodically-repeating sequence. A received signal is stored by the receiver for at least two repetitions of the periodically-repeating sequence. FFT operations are performed, and the resulting data frequency samples are pruned responsive to a hypothesized residual frequency, a procedure which significantly reduces the total number of subsequent calculations and therefore significantly reduces processing time. A correlation series is determined from the pruned samples and reference frequency samples corresponding to a hypothesized transmitter. If a match is found in the examination of this series, a code phase offset is determined; if not the process is repeated with another hypothesized residual frequency. Multiple correlation series similarly obtained may also be incoherently combined prior to this examination. The apparatus and method disclosed herein is particularly useful for combined position location and communication systems, especially those that are unsynchronized, such as assisted GPS (“A-GPS”) utilized on GSM and UMTS cellular telephone systems.
