Problems solved by technology

However, one problem with probabilistic scheduling is that a channel must be provided to all subscriber stations, whether they are transmitting or not, and this channel is typically a limited resource in most networks
Also, probabilistic scheduling as implemented by many 3G systems such as The Third Generation Partnership Program (www.3gpp.org) is designed for "session-based" services or more connection-like services , and is not optimized for mixed services of voice and traditional IP data services

Embodiment Construction

[0054] now refer to figure 1 , the wireless network used to transmit data is generally indicated at 20. The network 20 includes a radio base station 24 and a plurality of subscriber stations 28a, 28b...28n. In the presently preferred embodiment, the radio base station 24 passes through a suitable gateway and one or more backhauls (not shown), such as T1, T3, E1, E3, OC3 or other suitable landline links, or A satellite or other radio or microwave channel link, or any other link suitable for operation as a backhaul station as will occur to those skilled in the art, is connected to at least one data telecommunications network (not shown), such as a land-based Landline-based switched network, packet network, etc.

[0055] The base station 24 communicates with a subscriber station 28 which, in an embodiment of the invention, is installed at the subscriber's premises, as is common in wireless local loop (WLL) systems, but as will be seen , which may also be nomadic or may be a mo...

Abstract

A system, method and apparatus for managing uplink radio resources. RRAM uses selective rate reduction based on individual QoS requirements to ensure resources for user stations. The RRAM may disconnect subscriber stations that are at low data rates and have no media reservation in response to a request for a new DDCH. The RRAM attempts to increase or decrease the subscriber station's data rate in response to traffic measurement reports from the subscriber station. When there are insufficient uplink resources, RRAM attempts to reduce the rate of subscriber stations with higher rates. When searching for subscriber stations to be reduced, the RRAM starts at the highest rate and searches for lower data rates until a suitable candidate subscriber station is found. RRAM also reserves resources for user stations that will not be reallocated to other user stations.

Description

field of invention [0001] The invention relates to the field of radio resource allocation in networks. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system, apparatus and method for allocating radio resources to a plurality of subscriber stations transmitting to a radio base station. Background of the invention [0002] In a hybrid network designed to carry "media" and "data" services, the network needs to provide enough capacity (which can be measured as a data rate in bits / s) to meet the needs of each user. Media services such as telephony calls, streaming video, etc., require a predictable amount of network capacity (for example, a telephone call using the G.729AB codec requires 9.6 kbits / s); however, it must be ensured that the capacity. Otherwise, the latency will degrade the media service and result in an unsatisfactory user experience. Data traffic, such as HTTP requests and FTP services, will often require large amounts of capacity, but users will generall...
