Embodiment Construction

[0056] Figure 1 illustrates a traditional electronic tag system based on infrared (IR) communication. The system may also be based on any other wireless transmission method known in the art. The central unit 1 may be based on a personal computer (PC), including server software and executing like a server in the system. The central unit 1 includes a processor 2 and a memory 3 . Alternatively, the memory or part thereof may be an external unit connected to the central unit 1 . One or more base stations 4 are connected to the central unit 1, for example via an Ethernet connection or via serial communication. Each base station 4 is connected to a plurality of transceivers 5 . The base station 4 handles the modulation and generates the frequency for the carrier. The modulation may be pulse position modulation. The transceiver 5 converts the electronic signals received from the base station into IR signals and transmits these IR signals to a plurality of electronic tags 11 thro...

Abstract

A handheld device for personal use for communication with electronic labels (11) in an ESL system comprises, in addition to control means (55), memory means (61), transmission means (57) for transmitting a command to the electronic labels, and one or more buttons (53, 53') for user input, a receiver (63) for receiving informa-tion from a central unit (1) in the system. The information may comprise new com-mands, or an authorization code that may be included in commands sent to the labels for authorization of the handheld device.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a handheld device for use in an electronic shelf label system as defined in the preamble of claim 1 . The invention also relates to an electronic shelf label, an electronic shelf label system and a method for an electronic shelf label system according to the preambles of claims 15, 9 and 17 respectively. Background technique [0002] Electronic labeling systems are known in which electronic labels can be placed, for example, on shelves in grocery stores as price tags. The information displayed on the tag can be updated by the central unit through an infrared (IR) link or RF communication with the tag. Such systems are often referred to as electronic shelf labeling systems (ESL), but the labels do not necessarily have to be placed on the shelf. Alternatively, the tags may be hung from the ceiling or otherwise displayed. In this document, the phrases electronic tags and electronic shelf labels are used interchangeably and are ...
