Embodiment Construction

[0034] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are placed in the context of real-time transmission of digital data over an IP type network. In this exemplary embodiment, data is streamed via the RTP (Real Time Protocol) protocol. RFC 2733 describes a standard way of correcting data packets transmitted via the RTP protocol. This method is the subject of an extension described in the Pro-MPEG Forum's "Code of Practice" document.

[0035] In this exemplary embodiment, data packets are arranged in rows of L packets. Consider a grouped matrix of D rows and L columns as shown in Figure 1 . Choose L and D according to the desired effect. The manner in which these parameters affect the effectiveness of the correction method will be described below. Then apply the correction function to each column in the matrix. Then define a second row length L', which may be different from the row length L of the matrix. The only requirement on L' is that L' be a divisor of L*D or zero....

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of transmitting digital data packets protected by error correction packets and more precisely the manner of inserting these correction packets into the data packet stream so as to increase the correction effectiveness of the error correction method while limiting the latency introduced into the transmission. The packets are set out in matrix form, error packets are computed on lines and columns and are inserted regularly into the stream at a sufficient distance from the data packets that they protect.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to error correction in the context of sending digital data in packets, and more precisely to the manner in which correction packets are sent in a stream of data packets. Background technique [0002] When digital data is sent over a network in data packets, transmission errors can affect the packets. Networks that allow the transfer of digital data in packets have specific characteristics, such as bandwidth, latency, or reliability, that vary between different types of networks. Depending on the type of network, there are significantly different sensitivities to the different types of errors that may occur on such a network during the transmission of packet data. Types of errors that may occur are transmission of packets with erroneous bits, random loss of packets, loss of a sequence of adjacent packets, duplication of a packet or sequence of packets. [0003] To overcome these errors, two methods generally exist. One i...
