Embodiment Construction

[0016] Figure 1 schematically depicts a part of a conventional GSM network. The network is essentially divided into a core network part 20 and an access part known as the base station subsystem BSS10. Components of core network 20 depicted in the figure include Mobile Switching Center or MSC 202 , associated Home Location Register HLR 201 , Visitor Location Register VLR 204 and Serving General Packet Radio Access Switching Node SGSN 203 . The function and construction of these conventional GSM architecture components are known to those skilled in the art and will not be described in more detail here. Although not shown in the figure, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the core network portion may also include access to other mobile and fixed line networks, and to packet and circuit switched packet data networks via one or more network nodes access, wherein the mobile and fixed line networks may be ISDN and PSTN networks, and the packet and telephone switching packe...

Abstract

An unlicensed radio access network controller is proposed that is adapted to communicate with the core network portion of at least one public licensed mobile communication network. It is connected to a broadband packet switched network and is adapted to exchange messages with mobile stations communicating via an unlicensed radio interface with access points that are also connected to the broadband packet-switched network. The access controller is furthermore adapted to selectively communicate with a plurality of mobile service switching nodes within the core network portion and comprises a selection module arranged to select an individual one of the plurality of nodes for communicating with a mobile station via said access network controller.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the use of an unlicensed radio access network in conjunction with a cellular communication system. Background technique [0002] For mobile communication systems such as GSM, UTMS or CDMA2000, these systems usually consist of a core network part and multiple base stations connected to the core network part. Each base station is assigned to a specific coverage area, the size of which is determined by the power of the base station, the number of possible users in the area, and its terrain. Mobile stations within the coverage area of a base station are able to establish a radio connection with the base station using predetermined radio frequencies as determined by the appropriate licensing authority, thereby enabling communication with other users in said mobile communication network and other fixed or mobile networks connected thereto . [0003] Unlicensed radio access networks provide additional access points for cel...
