Problems solved by technology

The problem with this method is that the phase imbalance may vary with non-constant factors, such as the temperature of the surrounding environment
Such systems require additional complexity and cost due to the use of temperature measurement equipment and accompanying signal processing hardware and software

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several drawings.

[0028] As discussed above and shown in FIG. 1, conventional QAM modulator 100 receives an in-phase signal, called I signal 110, usually expressed as: I=i(t); a quadrature signal, called Q signal 120 , usually expressed as: Q=q(t). Wherein, i(t) and q(t) represent the information to be transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver in the communication system.

[0029] The I and Q signals typically contain digital data that is transmitted to a receiver via a carrier wave. Usually, the first carrier signal 130 generated by the oscillator 101 is applied to the multiplier 103 and modulated by the I signal 110 to generate the first component signal 150 . The present invention contemplates any standard device in this technical field that generates a carrier signal. The first carrier signal 130 is also applied to the phase shift circuit 102 , which ideally shifts the phase of the first carrier ...

Abstract

A system and method for generating a phase corrected M-QAM signal is presented. In one embodiment, the phase corrected M-QAM modulator includes a feedback loop for dynamically adjusting the phase relationship between the two carrier signals, which is the phase relationship of the two carrier signals to the I and Q input signals A function of the difference between the phase relationships. In another embodiment, the second carrier signal is obtained from the first carrier signal through a phase offset circuit, wherein the phase offset applied to the first carrier signal is the phase relationship between the two component signals comprising the QAM output signal and I A function of the difference between the phase relationship of the and Q input signals.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system and method for generating quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signals. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system and method for dynamically generating a phase-corrected quadrature-amplitude-modulated signal that is the phase relationship of its two component signals to the phase of the two input signals A function of the difference between the two input signals are often referred to as the "I" signal and the "Q" signal. Background technique [0002] Although the systems and methods of the present invention are not limited to wireless communication systems, one application for QAM modulators is in wireless communication systems. Conventional QAM modulators typically receive an in-phase signal (I signal) and a quadrature signal (Q signal), both of which contain digital data and a first carrier signal to be transmitted to the receiver. The I and Q signals are typically 90° out of phase with e...
