Touch sensitive keypad with tactile feedback

A keypad includes discrete keys formed by touch sensors or virtual keys on a touch sensitive area. The discrete or virtual keys are mechanically linked to a biased switch. The key that has been touched during a keystroke is identified through a signal from the touch sensors whilst a keystroke is recorded upon a signal from the biased switch. The combination of the touch sensors with a biased switch provides tactile feedback. The use of touch sensors or a touch sensitive area allows the keypad to be constructed with a substantially flush surface without parting lines.

Transmissive optical elements including transparent plastic shell having a phosphor dispersed therein, and methods of fabricating same

A transmissive optical element is fabricated by filling a mold with molten liquid that includes a transparent plastic and a phosphor additive, and allowing the molten liquid to solidify to produce the transmissive optical element having phosphor dispersed therein. Accordingly, a separate phosphor coating or phosphor-containing encapsulant need not be used. Transmissive optical elements include a shell made of transparent plastic with a phosphor dispersed therein. The phosphor may be uniformly and / or nonuniformly dispersed in the shell.

Communication using bi-directional LEDs

An optical communications transceiver includes an LED coupled in series with a resistor. A microprocessor has one I / O pin connected to the LED. In a first mode or transmit mode, the LED is periodically driving in forward bias to emit light to transmit data. In a second or receive mode, the LED is periodically not driven in reverse bias, e.g., reverse bias or zero bias. Then, the LED is allowed to change charge of the capacitance of the LED's junction using a photo-current. The change in charge is measured using a timer. When the change in charge exceeds a predetermined threshold, input light is sensed. Thus, the LED can be used to receive data in the second mode.
